Enable more flexibility in setting or unsetting the curl proxy.

Why an environment variable instead of an option?

Also, the curl docs (https://curl.haxx.se/libcurl/c/CURLOPT_PROXY.html) state that libcurl already respects http_proxy etc. Wouldn't those work?

You are correct, *_proxy do work. Somehow I got convinced that they didn't, my mistake.
