Motivation for this change

I'm currently trying to set up a mail server (well, just a forwarder) with LDAP and Postfix. To this end, I've had to add support to LDAP to the postfix package, and allow changing the package used by the postfix service.

Things done
  • Tested using sandboxing
    (nix.useSandbox on NixOS,
    or option build-use-sandbox in nix.conf
    on non-NixOS)
  • Built on platform(s)
    • NixOS
    • macOS
    • Linux
  • Tested compilation of all pkgs that depend on this change using nix-shell -p nox --run "nox-review wip"
  • Tested execution of all binary files (usually in ./result/bin/)
  • Fits CONTRIBUTING.md.

Sorry, something went wrong.

LGTM, but note that the maintainer @peti is opposed to adding package options: #14101

Well, for reference, peti suggests using something like

  nixpkgs.config.packageOverrides = pkgs: { postfix = pkgs.postfix.override { withPgSQL = true; }; };

I'm not against it, but I feel like it's inconsistent with the way a lot of services are packaged (From those I use, nginx, redis and xonsh have a package attribute, and a bunch of other package have it too). IMO, we should either mandate every service to have the package attribute, or remove all the existing one, and have an officially mandated way to replace the package used by a service.

IMHO, the package attribute is redundant and doesn't add any functionality that cannot be achieved without it. Defining a package makes sense for some packages who have many (potentially incompatible) versions in Nixpkgs, like PostgreSQL, but Postfix doesn't strike me as a tool that falls into this category.
