I was following some notes I found here:
http://rexchung.com/2013/08/02/speed-up-jruby-rails-startup-time/

ruby --ng-server seems to work fine, but --ng returns an error, as does other various iterations I thought might work. What is the proper way to use nailgun now?

I get an error saying:

Usage: java com.martiansoftware.nailgun.NGServer
       or: java com.martiansoftware.nailgun.NGServer port
       or: java com.martiansoftware.nailgun.NGServer IPAddress
       or: java com.martiansoftware.nailgun.NGServer IPAddress:port

I had JRUBY_OPTS defined as: "--1.9 -X+O -J-Xmx2g"....setting JRUBY_OPTS to nothing allowed this to work for me (using jruby 1.7.9).

Yes, it should work that way.
jruby --ng-server
jruby --ng -e "puts 'hi'"

Check if your firewall accepts ng connections and attach the error message.
