Either download from Cachix:

nix-store -r /nix/store/z2pq6ynln0dbc910cggvwi4wc53bgg5h-newlib-3.0.0.20180802 \
  --option binary-caches 'https://cache.nixos.org/ https://r-ryantm.cachix.org/' \
  --option trusted-public-keys '
  r-ryantm.cachix.org-1:gkUbLkouDAyvBdpBX0JOdIiD2/DP1ldF3Z3Y6Gqcc4c=
  cache.nixos.org-1:6NCHdD59X431o0gWypbMrAURkbJ16ZPMQFGspcDShjY=
  '

(r-ryantm's Cachix cache is only trusted for this store-path realization.)

Or, build yourself:

nix-build -A newlib https://github.com/r-ryantm/nixpkgs/archive/0379d5d108cdc7f4ae8e1b00b4d381f9855491c6.tar.gz

After you've downloaded or built it, look at the files and if there are any, run the binaries:

ls -la /nix/store/z2pq6ynln0dbc910cggvwi4wc53bgg5h-newlib-3.0.0.20180802
ls -la /nix/store/z2pq6ynln0dbc910cggvwi4wc53bgg5h-newlib-3.0.0.20180802/bin

Doesn't seem like 3.0.0.20180802 is a stable release. Nothing on https://www.sourceware.org/newlib/news.html or in their mailing list.
(also this package could use some meta )

And if we want to jump to a newer version for bugfixes then there is already a v3.0.0.20180831

@c0bw3b It looks like a bunch of major repositories are on these snapshot releases https://repology.org/metapackage/newlib/versions

I think they're all the Debian-based distros that are doing this. This kind of throws repology off but they all use the same Debian ports upstream IIRC. Should be fine to wait for a real release though.
