The team behind ksonnet was aquired by VMware, and they decided to end
work on ksonnet:

Prior to the acquisition, Heptio had been shifting focus and resources
away from ksonnet; with the acquisition, we felt it was the right time
to rethink our investment in ksonnet. As a result, work on ksonnet will
end and the GitHub repositories will be archived. It’s extremely
difficult to step back from a project we have worked so hard on, but
we’re excited about our new ideas and vision for changing how developers
experience the Kubernetes and cloud native ecosystems.

Since my initial addition of ksonnet in #43644, there were some new versions released, but no bumps appeared in nixpkgs, so I'm not sure somebody is actually using it - escpecially, with all development being ended now, we shouldn't ship this in nixpkgs IMHO.

  • Tested using sandboxing (nix.useSandbox on NixOS, or option sandbox in nix.conf on non-NixOS)
  • Built on platform(s)
    • NixOS
    • macOS
    • other Linux distributions
  • Tested via one or more NixOS test(s) if existing and applicable for the change (look inside nixos/tests)
  • Tested compilation of all pkgs that depend on this change using nix-shell -p nix-review --run "nix-review wip"
  • Tested execution of all binary files (usually in ./result/bin/)
  • Determined the impact on package closure size (by running nix path-info -S before and after)
  • Assured whether relevant documentation is up to date
  • Fits CONTRIBUTING.md.

I'm pretty sure this is going to be forked, ksonnet is quite popular in some circles.

since you're the maintainer I think the decision should be up to you

Well, I'd prefer re-adding it once it's maintained again, instead of letting it bitrot here ;-)

I certainly don't use it, makes sense to me to remove it for now.
