Motivation for this change

The -no-remote option prevents opening new tabs in an running
tor-browser session. E.g. executing tor-browser https://example.com
from the command line always starts a new session regardless of a
running instance

Please note, I have no clue what the original reason was to add the
option -no-remote. Maybe this has severe security implications, I
simply don't know.

Things done
  • Tested using sandboxing (nix.useSandbox on NixOS, or option sandbox in nix.conf on non-NixOS)
  • Built on platform(s)
    • NixOS
    • macOS
    • other Linux distributions
  • Tested via one or more NixOS test(s) if existing and applicable for the change (look inside nixos/tests)
  • Tested compilation of all pkgs that depend on this change using nix-shell -p nix-review --run "nix-review wip"
  • Tested execution of all binary files (usually in ./result/bin/)
  • Determined the impact on package closure size (by running nix path-info -S before and after)
  • Assured whether relevant documentation is up to date
  • Fits CONTRIBUTING.md.

I tracked it down all the way to 19ecb7f#diff-f761f1b234f85824da764291f88c1097R196 which was the initial commit. @joachifm do you remember the reason behind the --no-remote flag?

@kalbasit the motivation is to reduce the risk of mixups when using tor browser along with vanilla firefox at the same time, primarily avoiding sending urls intended for tbb to the vanilla instance. Afair, the upstream wrapper no longer passes this flag explicitly, so this PR would bring us into line with upstream.

I do believe upstream is patched to behave as if no-remote was passed by default, however, requiring explicitly passing -allow-remote to get the same behavior as vanilla without no-remote. I've never needed this feature so never really thought too much about it or tested it out.

Thank you for your contributions.
This has been automatically marked as stale because it has had no activity for 180 days.
If this is still important to you, we ask that you leave a comment below. Your comment can be as simple as "still important to me". This lets people see that at least one person still cares about this. Someone will have to do this at most twice a year if there is no other activity.
Here are suggestions that might help resolve this more quickly:

  1. Search for maintainers and people that previously touched the
related code and @ mention them in a comment.
  2. Ask on the NixOS Discourse. 3. Ask on the #nixos channel on
    irc.freenode.net.
