Motivation for this change

Why was this renamed? I have similar concerns as #44107 about this. Either way lib.version doesn't even exist in 18.03 yet, it shouldn't be deprecated yet.

Things done
  • Tested using sandboxing (nix.useSandbox on NixOS, or option sandbox in nix.conf on non-NixOS)
  • Built on platform(s)
    • NixOS
    • macOS
    • other Linux distributions
  • Tested via one or more NixOS test(s) if existing and applicable for the change (look inside nixos/tests)
  • Tested compilation of all pkgs that depend on this change using nix-shell -p nox --run "nox-review wip"
  • Tested execution of all binary files (usually in ./result/bin/)
  • Determined the impact on package closure size (by running nix path-info -S before and after)
  • Fits CONTRIBUTING.md.

if the majority of maintainers is against this then it's fine and we can revert this. As stated in the commit message this was a suggestion by reviewers of the original PR (which I personally agreed on).

But for the future, please notify the folks whose commits are about to get reverted, I openend a PR myself and it would be great if we could avoid duplicated work in such cases :)
