Both yosys and VPR report githash and version when used:

yosys:

 Yosys 0.9+932 (git sha1 8fe9c84e, clang 8.0.1-3+build1 -fPIC -Os)

VPR:

Version: 8.0.0-rc1+21df3a5d0
Revision: v8.0.0_rc1_1532_g92e57c2d0_127_g7b9b69d0e_428_g1c5263d74_290_g3b3182dd7-636-g21df3a5d0
Compiled: 2020-02-10T14:02:51
Compiler: Clang 7.0.1 on Linux-5.2.17-1rodete3-amd64 x86_64

The yosys XDC and FASM plugins should do something similar.
