Thank you for everything, Jim -- including so much more than I could possibly mention in a comment. I always wanted to speak to you, and will never get the chance... which has inspired me to come out of my shell some and get involved so much more than I ever have before. That's the greatest gift you could have given me -- and it's devastating that I won't have the chance to let you know that.

Rest in peace. You're still teaching us how to be better people.

I started as a hacker. With .NET, I was a coder. With PHP, I was a programmer. With JavaScript I was a developer. Then I came to Ruby and experienced great tools like Rake and Gem, and became a Software Engineer. Thank you Jim Weirich, you have helped me immeasurably in my career. Ruby, nor me, would be where they are today without you. You have set a very high standard to be strived for in the next generation of software engineering teachers and collaborators. Rest in peace.

I can never forget your entertaining 'Adventures in Functional Programming' talk---I instantly likened you to a Santa Claus, bringing in gifts of Joy & Discoveries...!
Those countless talks, write-ups & tools like Rake, truly make you one of the best 'gems' Ruby community has had the privilege of having.

I watched Bob Martin's "Architecture: The Lost Years" at the end of last year and have been searching for patterns to decouple my business logic from my framework. Thank you, Jim, for showing me how, two years after your passing. If that isn't a testament to the work you did while you were still with us, I don't know what is.

For the last 6 years, I have been receiving the occasional email eulogizing Jim for his work and life. I was blessed to work with him for a time, and I remember being in awe when I began, given his avalanche of accomplishments. I was looking for my first official programming job, and when I learned he lived and worked in Cincinnati, I immediately did everything I could to work with him. His accomplishments were a beacon to me even as ignorant as I was in those days.

One time, a few months later, we paired and I asked how a method was using some parameter, and he looked at me saying, "I have no idea really, so let's go find out!" He navigated within Emacs to get to the source code and then traced the method through the entire path of execution within 3 seconds. Then we discussed how that might affect the method we were working on.

What we were building wasn't mission critical, or difficult, and he could have easily found another solution to cover his ignorance, or just given me a sufficient answer to my question, but he didn't. He exposed his own ignorance, and through his humility, showed me the difference between being a good programmer and an epic one. And that was just a reflection of the larger lesson that he gave to so many: how to be a great human. This was Jim in all ways big and small.

Many will continue for years to post here in remembrance of his unparalleled contributions to the Ruby community, through his talks at conferences as well as the ingenuity in his contributions. And those episodes by themselves are worth the love and remembrances.

I just felt like it should be stressed that underneath all that Jim did, he was a truly amazing human being. He changed me in ways that I didn't realize for years, and he still affects how I work and think about the world that surrounds me.

So, thank you Jim, and rest in peace.

Got to meet Jim at conferences a few times. Sure, he really "got" software development, anyone who's seen one of his talks knows that. But he was also incredibly welcoming to new Ruby developers (and just incredibly nice all around). Profoundly impacted by Jim's contribution to the programming community as a whole.

My FSAdvent contribution this year pays homage to @jimweirich and works through the derivation of the Y-Combinator in F# just like he did for Ruby! Maybe someone will find out about Jim's work through it and be profoundly impacted as well.
