Is this true? I edited the pom.xml to compile for 1.6, but got errors like "multi-catch statement is not supported in -source 1.6".

Yep - we moved over end of last year. Since Java 1.7 no longer has public updates (in favour of Java 8) we wanted to move along. Thanks for updating the README.
