I like the additional detail compared to my draft for contributing in response to our discussion last summer. Could you add a brief Getting Started section at the top that points people to our getting started as a developer wiki page? |

This might be a good place to promote a convention of naming a branch based on the work being done – e.g.,
git checkout -b TRUNK-4567
Further edits based on feedback from Burke and "Using Git" wiki page.
